When you need to move your piano, you will likely need a professional piano mover. This is not one of the easiest tasks but when you see how the pros do it, you may be suprised at how easy they make it look.

So, how do they move your piano? In most cases they will bring a special board and straps. They lift each side of the piano and place the board underneath and then strap it together securely. From this point, they will often put a dolly underneath the board and wheel it through your house and down the walkway and then use a hydraulic lift to put it on the truck.

The tricky part can be when you have stairs, usually they will slide the piano down the stairs carefully. You want to make sure that the piano movers are quite strong especially if you have stairs as this is a time when your piano could go for a tumble if they are not careful!

When choosing a moving company to move your piano, make sure that they are insured. You do not want to have an uninsured company moving your expensive piano as if there are any damages you will be stuck with them and pianos are expensive.

After you choose a reputable moving company to move your piano you can relax and leave it to the pros. I recommend though that you supervise and be sure to speak up if it looks like they are doing something that is risky or just plain stupid. I have met a lot of movers and while most of them are good guys, some are a little light between the ears if you know what I mean. (I used to be a mover and most movers will agree with my comment!)

If you want to move your piano yourself and its a fairly easy move, you can probably rent or make a strong board to put the piano on and then use heavy duty straps. Get at least 2 strong friend to help you and rent a truck with a hydraulic lift on the back. Be sure to use a lot of moving blankets to cushion between the piano and the wall of the truck. Use two or more straps when strapping the piano to the side and remember to drive slowly and take it easy over bumps.
